Even if you only achieve 1 item on this list, it's 1 item that you didn't have before. The more items you can attain then the more private your life will be from the organised harassers.
22 Point Checklist of things to consider when moving home:
1. Good perimeter fencing or natural vegetation, such as evergreen conifer hedging or bushes, will prevent a line of sight to your property.
2. Private driveway with gated access will allow you to keep unwanted cars and people out.
3. Look for internal rooms which offer more privacy and soundproofing.
4. Look for rooms which have no shared walls with neighbours next door. Shared walls = possible noise harassment from your neighbour.
5. Look for rooms which could potentially offer more protection e.g. a basement room.
6. Consider a garden with well established and mature trees which provide a natural canopy and prevent line-of-sight or overhead snooping.
7. Choose properties away from nearby roadways, footpaths and parking lots as these can provide harassers with more convenient access to harass you.
8. Choose properties away from neighbouring properties.
9. Choose properties that are not overlooked by neighbouring properties - Aim to have a barrier between your property and the neighbouring property to prevent line-of-sight snooping and harassment engagement.
10. Avoid communal flats or properties with shared accessways / walkways / hallways as these will invite strangers to your door and invite strangers to wait in those areas.
11. Where possible, go for a property within its own grounds and which is sheltered on as many sides as possible by natural barriers or substantial perimeter fencing.
12. Avoid properties which are directly visible from the street to instantly provide more privacy. The further the property is from the street then usually the better.
13. If you have a car, choose a property which has a garage so you can lock your vehicle in the garage to avoid tampering.
14. Where possible, choose a property which has multiple exit routes so you can switch the exits and entry points that you use.
15. Choose properties in areas which have less footfall and less vehicular access so that if someone is harassing you it is far more obvious.
16. Choose a property where you can install good exterior lighting which can easily alert you to an unwanted individual.
17. Check your local laws to ensure you can do things like place security cameras around your house to record events. Position inward-facing for evidence, not outward-facing to avoid legal disputes.
18. Look for a place with low noise levels which can help you relax and sleep better.
19. Where privacy cannot be immediately obtained, consider items you can add yourself to the property such as privacy screening or trellises in the garden and the use of privacy film or curtains on the windows.
20. Look for rooms which offer less potential for audio eavesdropping and illegal surveillance.
21. Look for double glazed windows as a minimum standard. Triple glazing is now also available which will really help to reduce external noise levels.
22. Go for properties which have more of a substantial construction e.g. thicker walls, as these will provide more noise insulation.
