Our Message
If you hear some information, rumours or gossip about someone in your community, please take everything you hear at face value.
Essentially - Do not believe everything you are told, as it may simply be false and not true.
"Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see" is a famous quote from Edgar Allan Poe (from his 1845 story The System of Doctor Tarr and Professor Fether).
He warns against blindly trusting rumours or second-hand information, and urges skepticism even toward what we witness firsthand.
Basically, if I was to put it into my own words; you should take everything you hear with a pinch of salt - regardless of who provides that information.
Nowadays, it is easier than ever before for lies and falsehoods to be spread about someone. It can happen in the traditional ways such as neighbours gossiping, work mates pulling down a colleague, or a person destroying someone's character as they have a coffee with their friend in the local cafe.
However, lies and falsehoods can also be spread in the online world and mobile phone environment. With the advent of chat groups, chat forums, communication apps and shareable media, this gossip can be shared amongst hundreds at the simple click of a button.
Slander, misinformation and nasty gossip can not only leave reputations extremely difficult - if not impossible - to recover from, but it can destroy lives. It is as simple as that.It can be especially damaging when that gossip, slander and lies is deliberately carried out against an individual as part of a sustained campaign against them.
So, please, when you hear that next "story" or you hear the latest "hot gossip" about someone, please do what Mr. Poe advises and "Believe nothing you hear, and only one half that you see".
Thankyou for reading and thankyou for your understanding 💗 We sincerely appreciate it.
